Sacred Heart- Huge percentage of the worlds population goes to sleep hungry. I wanted to help the homeless and hunger. A Place at the Table with Martin De Porres 4/2/10

The Martin de Porres House of Hospitality serves hot, healthful meals to people everyday of the week. Due to the sensitive nature of the situation, limited video and photo were allowed. Visitors to the kitchen ranged from the homeless to those whose paychecks just didn’t meet their needs this month.

The beautiful courtyard features expressive murals as well as a peaceful garden. Its tranquil atmosphere was the perfect setting for… Continue

Family Volunteering- How to sign up young volunteers!

Frequently Project Leaders and HOBA staff receive emails with parents wanting to get their kids involved.

It is great to see young people supporting our community, and HOBA has many kid and family friendly projects to support these young volunteers.

The registration process for volunteers under 16 years is a little different because it must be done manually in HOT.

As a reminder:

When I get an email from a parent wanting to get their youngster involved, I do these… Continue

Spruce Up the Conservatory of Flowers

The breathtakingly gorgeous Conservatory of Flowers needed a little extra help with some special behind the scenes projects on March 27th, and called in the Hoba crew.

Most people know the COF as a beautiful museum that hosts special world-renowned plant exhibits. What they don’t know is there is lots of work to be done backstage before the exhibits come to life. Enter HOBA.

Volunteers were hard at work moving heavy equipment for an exhibit on…

E-mail sign-ups

Our new-member registration fee has brought in more than $1,000 for HOBA since it began on March 15. More than half of our new volunteers have chosen to support their service with $25 or more. At this rate, it looks like the fee will be able to cover about 20% of the cost of the calendar.

But the new fee has confused a few people who opt not to donate and wonder why certain projects are closed to them. Those who don't fill out a fee waiver form and don't donate…

Animal Care with Fix Our Ferals

At the East Bay SPCA Spay and Neuter Surgery Center in Oakland, around 140 cats total were being "fixed" through a Fix Our Ferals Event. Many of the cats were stray, captured by local residents, and will be released back to their original environment after they are rehabilitated.

Over 30 volunteers showed up bright and early for the all-day clinic, several of them from HandsOn. Several tasks were at hand to ensure that the surgery went smoothly, from… Continue
