Share your volunteer stories, meet friends, & learn about Bay Area volunteering
Patrice Prentice has been with HOBA since-- (jeez Louise)-- since we were known as "Community Impact"--- 1999! She is long overdue for her close-up, so here goes:
What's your favorite HOBA project?
That's a tough one. The ones I've enjoyed recently have been at JVS and Alameda Point Collaborative. But I have a particular soft spot for Loaves and Fishes in San Jose. I like the feeling of camaraderie with the other volunteers while we're preparing the meal, and I love the interactions with the guests.
Why did you become a Project Leader?
Because someone asked me to! At my first couple of volunteer events, I could see how a good project leader really made the difference to both the volunteers and to the agencies. I was a little nervous at first, but it worked out just fine.
What do you do when you’re not leading volunteer projects?
I went back to school recently and got my MA in education. I’m a new teacher. The kids are so much fun.
I volunteer because it feels good! I get to interact with great people and do something positive for my community at the same time.
Why HOBA? Well, it's easy, for one thing. I also have always appreciated the wide range of organizations I can choose from.
Music or movies?
Movies. I would see three a day if I could.
Painting or sculpture?
Oh, painting, definitely. Though Michelangelo's David is pretty darn impressive.
Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune?
I have a secret wish to be on Jeopardy. I love trivia! Though I suppose I had better brush up on Geography first.
Mashed or baked?
One of my favorite things in the world is to eat mashed potatoes…while watching movies. There. You know my deepest secret.
